NILE DAHABIYAH
Size: 46cms x 63cms (18 x 25ins approx.) A Dahabiyah is a barge type vessel with two sails used to carry passengers up and down the Nile in times past. Similar craft are depicted on the walls of the tombs of the Pharaohs. These river going sail boats were popular in the early 20th century when sophisticated travellers loved to cruise the Nile at a leisurely pace visiting temples and taking in the scenery in great style. These desirable craft are now enjoying a revival, being upgraded to modern day standards and provide a wonderfully peaceful and unhurried way to cruise the Nile. This drawing depicts one of these newly converted craft with a Nile 'taxi' moored beside it. |
